Small Dog Workshop: Containers & Vehicles

Tura is a 9-month-old English Cocker Spaniel who was just started on odor about 2 months ago. We are currently practicing for an upcoming ORT.

In this search the odor was NACSW strength clove and it was aged for ~1 hour. The air conditioner is on with the fan on blowing across the top of the containers.

We need to work on value for closed boxes - she doesn't check all of them but does find the hot box rather quickly. Occasionally she does bump the boxes and rarely will lift a paw if I am slow to call it.

She is doing well on vehicles. We have done minnows on the car and now doing one hide searches with two vehicles.

Alamea is prone to distractions in gravel areas.

I set up three plastic boxes in gravel in a novel area.

I used primary to increase her drive for searching. The first 2 runs I used only 1 "hot" container.

The 3rd run had 2 "hot" containers.

I know you said to practice before the final video, but I wanted you to see the difference between the first and the other two. She was more engaged after she realized that food was the reward, and she didn't have to wait for it.

Bear has been doing Nosework for 2 years and he is a 4.5 year old Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix. We are competing at NW3 but he is often very distracted and uninterested in vehicles so we started at Primary. All 3 of the searches are back to back. I started him off leash to see how he works without the influence of the leash but then for the last 2 rounds I did put him on leash as he appears to be area focused. We did have to work through some dog distractions with the neighbors walking by in the first search. Overall I think he improved with his vehicle focus but I think he is confused without odor as he tends to be disinterested when no odor is present.
